Five Fabulous To Dos for May 2022 in the Highlands

🍄 Forage for mushrooms in amongst the pines of the beautiful Penrose State Forest with the experts Experience Nature. You’ll likely find and learn about Slippery Jacks and Saffron Milk Caps then enjoy a warming cook up, local sour dough bread and a cool climate wine tasting to top things off there in the forest.

🏫 Promenade in your Regency finest (Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy style), around historic Exeter with Sydney Regency Weekends who have put together a wonderful program of unique events celebrating the very romantic Regency period on May 14 & 15. “A Regency Affair at Exeter Village” is a ticketed event and includes a Ball, learning to dance Regency style, whist & fencing demonstrations, croquet, & a visit to Harpers Mansion and Maze in Berrima. President of the Jane Austen Society of Australia, Susannah Fullerton will also be bringing to life the period with several talks. Cannot wait to see the Regency period coming to pretty Exeter!

🎨 Plan a day at the beautiful new regional gallery at Ngununggala in the grounds of historic Retford Park in Bowral. The current exhibition which runs until mid May is by John Olsen, with works from across his illustrious career. The gallery have also got a great program of events for kids, not to mention yoga and Nights and Ngununggala so check their website. Right beside the gallery is a lovely café, Hearth by Moonacres, celebrating local farm produce, where there is also plenty of outdoor seating should you have the pooch or the bike with you. Choose a day when the Retford Park gardens are open by the National Trust and you have a full day of activities sorted.

🚜 Soak up the Sutton Forest rural vistas at Sutton Forest Inn with the whole family & pooch in tow at one of the best pubs in the Highlands. There’s an expansive beer garden & playground including an old tractor to explore. Bistro food & burgers plus local craft beer by Southern Highlands Brewing. Striking container art sits in amongst the tables too. Something for everyone at this pub!
